The Drow take this opportunity to perform the Dark Ritual. Huge black Monoliths arise from the ground, and a dark cloud covers the Lands of the Great Races. Those Kingdoms that have advanced magical knowledge, manage to lift their lands above the dark cloud.
The land below, the Darklands, is ruled by Drow, Tiefling, Orcs. Human settlement outside of the levitated lands suffer under the oppression of evil, or struggle to remain independent.
The world falls into a Dark Age.
Religions and Churches rise as mankind looks for salvation.
Great warlords arise.
The greatest of them becomes the first Emperor, at his sides the Grand Council of Wizards and the One Church of Athun.
Eventually, the Empire falls into decadence, and shatters. Many Marches declare indipendence

4e references to Nerath, should be thought of the human empire you describe here?
The Empire would be the Empire of Aduria, but indeed it has many similarities with Nerath.
As this was written with 3.5 in mind, it is funny to see homw many of these ideas can be found in 4E.
